A young man travels through space and time to fulfill an obscure mission imposed on him by an alien artifact in the eerie science fiction novel, My Remembered Tomorrows by Jack van Brunschot. Trevor Hall, an encoder for Synthetic Consciousness, travels to the International Space Station to assist his uncle's examination and analysis of an ancient craft discovered on the far side of the moon. However, he inadvertently is seeded with nodules from the artifact and is hi-jacked into piloting the alien spacecraft. To return to his former life and girlfriend, Trevor must go on a six-week expedition into space alone. However, the synth didn't elaborate that they would be traveling hundreds of thousands of light-years and that his six weeks would translate into years for those he left behind on earth. Traveling blindly with only the companionship of a synth, Trevor is not even made aware of the purpose of the mysterious journey. Will Trevor ever see his friends and family again? Or will he die alone on an alien planet?
My Remembered Tomorrows by Jack van Brunschot is a profound science fiction novel that reminded me of the 1968 science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. From the very first scene, an eerie and forbidding atmosphere permeates the plot, and as the protagonist's unpropitious and grim journey proceeds, it continues to color the story. The dialogue between the protagonist and the synthetic consciousness is the crux of the story, eloquently creating the backdrop and context of the storyline. Capturing the imagination with captivating imagery and extraordinary off-world settings, it is a thought-provoking, fascinating story that will entertain those who enjoy provocative science fiction novels with alien technology and space travel.
